For most of the inter-war years the Underground Group and then, after formation in 1933, the LPTB issued an annual desk diary. Produced to a high standard the later issues were printed at the Curwen Press in Plaistow and each issue took a theme associated with London and its transport. This, for 1938, looks at Londoners in their broadest sense and includes photographs of various related subjects.
The pages for late July show a photograph entitled ‘Meal Relief’ and showing draught horses eating from their meal bags. It is a reminder than even up to and including the 1950s, horses were still a major part of commercial transport in the city despite the growth in motor transport. This group can be seen hitched to open goods wagons some of which carry commerical advertising posters on their sides as did many commercial motor vehicles at the time. No location is given but these look like fish boxes – one is marked Milford Haven – and so it may be Billingsgate Fish Market.
