Celebrated Sculptor from Arunachal Pradesh to Showcase Work Abroad
ITANAGAR, March 7 – Renowned sculptor Dr. Bahom Kaling Darang, hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, is set to display his remarkable artwork at the esteemed annual exhibition of the Society of Portrait Sculptors in the United Kingdom. This prestigious event will occur from March 17 to March 30 in London.
A Significant Milestone in Sculptural Excellence
In its impressive 61st iteration, this exhibition will feature Dr. Darang’s piece titled ‘The Konyak.’
From Dental Surgery to Sculpture
Originating from Pasighat in East Siang district, Dr. Darang practices dentistry and currently resides in Guwahati, Assam. He plans to embark on his journey to London next week for this significant occasion. In a recent interview with our publication, he elaborated on the rigorous selection process that artists must endure before having their work displayed at this notable exhibit.
“The selection requires a two-tier elimination round where initial submissions consist of photographs and videos of the artwork,” explained Dr. Darang. “Based on these preliminary materials, jurors compile a shortlist.” Artists who make it through then must physically submit their sculptures for final evaluations.
A Prestigious Competition with Global Participation
Once selected for display and sale at the exhibit, participating artists are invited to London for an unparalleled showcasing opportunity. “This event holds great prestige; only a handful gain acceptance each year,” he noted with pride. “About one hundred pieces are featured annually; approximately two-thirds are chosen through open submissions worldwide.”
Passion Beyond Profession
Despite being professionally trained as a dental surgeon, Dr. Darang has always nurtured a deep passion for sculpture art since childhood.
“My initial learning was self-directed,” he recounted about his early days as an artist; however, he further honed his skills by attending workshops led by prominent contemporary sculptors during visits to Spain in 2022 and The Florence Academy of Art in Italy back in 2024.”
With enthusiasm bubbling within him – “I create sculptures representing various tribes across Northeast India,” added Dr.Darang passionately.” Through my art I aspire not just showcase our heritage but connect cultures around the globe.”
