INS Tushil: A New Chapter in Indo-British Naval Relations
Location: London
The Indian Navy’s newest multi-role stealth-guided missile frigate, INS Tushil, has made its inaugural port call in London during its first operational deployment. This marks a significant step forward in strengthening maritime partnerships.
Reception by Royal Navy Command
On Sunday, Commodore Robert Bellfield, the Royal Navy Commander for London and Eastern England, received INS Tushil on behalf of the UK government. Captain Peter Varghese, the ship’s commanding officer, welcomed him aboard.
“It is a privilege to host INS Tushil as it embarks on its first international journey,” commented Bellfield. “This event showcases the robust relationship between our two navies and reflects our mutual interests.”
Sujit Ghosh, India’s Deputy High Commissioner to the UK, also visited the vessel moored along the River Thames before it sets sail later tonight.

The Journey Ahead for INS Tushil
This advanced frigate was constructed in Russia and officially commissioned on December 9 with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh present for its inauguration. It set off from Kaliningrad three days later on December 17.
A statement released by India’s Ministry of Defence highlights that INS Tushil will navigate through vital waterways including the Baltic Sea, North Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and eventually enter the Indian Ocean. The ship aims to make several port visits at allied nations along this route.
Main Objectives During Deployment
The primary mission of this maiden deployment integrates essential aspects of naval diplomacy encompassing diplomatic engagements as well as military operations. The ship is expected to conduct joint maritime patrols and partnership exercises with various navies throughout its voyage — particularly focusing on areas susceptible to piracy threats.
Cultural and Capacity-Building Engagements
During each port call throughout its journey, INS Tushil will participate in activities aimed at enhancing capabilities alongside host navies while fostering discussions with high-ranking military officials and government representatives from those nations. These engagements also serve an important role in connecting with members of the Indian diaspora living abroad.
A Commitment To Maritime Security
The Ministry further noted that these visits are instrumental in fortifying India’s maritime collaborations with coastal countries around these waters while reasserting the Indian Navy’s dedication towards safeguarding maritime communities globally.
