London, 30th November 2024 – In a remarkable celebration, the iconic Bali Jatra festival, which honors the ancient trading customs of Odisha, made its debut in the UK at Townley Grammar School in Bexley. Organized by the Odisha Society of United Kingdom (OSUK), this inaugural event successfully attracted over 500 participants, including prominent figures and leaders from both India and the UK. Generously supported by Shree Jagannath Developer, Odisha Tourism, and Roptia, attendees experienced a vibrant display of Odia cultural heritage.
The event was ceremonially kicked off with Boita Bandana led by Dr. Bhargava Vasudevan, Deputy Lieutenant of Gravesham alongside Manoj Panda from the Indian High Commission. This uplifting ceremony involved floating miniature boats adorned with lit lamps as a heartfelt tribute to Odisha’s rich history in maritime trade with Southeast Asia.
The proceedings commenced with renditions of both Indian and British national anthems followed closely by ‘Bande Utkala Janani,’ sung by women from the Odia community under the direction of vocalist Sonali Pattnaik. The atmosphere was further enlivened as Odissi dance maestro Aviroop Sengupta along with his student Adwiti Tripathy Pattnayak enchanted spectators through an outstanding Mangala Charana performance. Additionally, yoga instructor Sitanshu Sahu conducted a session focusing on mental health that captivated those present.
OSUK representatives underscored Odisha’s significant maritime traditions and their modern implications; Mrs. Sweta Mohanty outlined India’s dedication to rekindling its maritime prowess through initiatives like shipbuilding projects. Dr. Bibhuti Bhusan Pattnayak expressed great pride in this successful milestone for OSUK stating that “Bali Jatra UK exemplifies our enduring spirit within the Odia diaspora.” He emphasized how such events embody shared values resonating through ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’—the concept that all humanity belongs together.
This prestigious initiative received acclaim from various dignitaries including Smt.
