"Rush-hour commuters complained of “pizza oven” temperatures on Tubes and buses as Londoners braced for the hottest July day in almost a decade.
Health experts have today urged employers to allow staff to travel outside peak times to avoid “unbearable” conditions with a predicted 36C(96.8F) high making Britain hotter than Rio.
The Standard joined workers braving the capital’s key Tube and bus routes at the height of last night’s rush hour.
Temperatures on the Central line at Liverpool Street reached 34C(93.2F) – more than four degrees hotter than the streets above.
Bus passengers fared even worse, with temperatures on the top-deck of some services hitting 36.8C(98.24F) — far above the 30C(86F) legal limit for transporting cattle.
Transport for London today admitted there was “still work to do” and promised 40 per cent of the network would be served by air-conditioned trains by the end of 2016.
At 5.30pm on the Central line at Oxford Circus, the Standard recorded 32C(89.6F) heat and humidity at 43 per cent. Ninety minutes later, as rush hour drew to a close, passengers on the Bakerloo Line at Baker Street were still enduring 31.7C(89.06F) temperatures and 51 per cent humidity."
