LONDON (AP) — Late Friday, the inaugural flight touched down at Heathrow Airport, approximately 18 hours after a significant fire at an electrical substation resulted in a power outage that halted operations at Europe’s most bustling airport.
A British Airways aircraft landed just before sunset following the lifting of the airport’s closure order, which had caused widespread disruptions for vast numbers of travelers.
According to FlightRadar24, over 1,350 flights to and from Heathrow were affected by this incident. The ramifications of this disruption are expected to linger for several days as passengers attempt to rebook their journeys and airlines work on repositioning planes and their crews.
The cause of the fire remains unknown; however, authorities have stated that there is currently no indication of foul play.
Residents living near west London reported hearing a loud explosion followed by flames and smoke billowing from the electrical substation located close to the airport.
As news broke regarding the closure, around 120 flights were already in transit. Many were rerouted or redirected to airports such as Gatwick in London, Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris, or Shannon Airport in Ireland according to tracking data.
Lawrence Hayes experienced this firsthand while flying with Virgin Atlantic from New York when he was informed mid-flight that his plane would land in Glasgow instead. “I was on a red-eye flight after having an exhausting day,” Hayes shared with BBC upon disembarking. “Fortunately, I managed to reach my wife who has kindly arranged a train ticket for me back home; it’s going to be an exceptionally long day.”
Heathrow Airport ranks among the world’s premier hubs for international flying; earlier this year it recorded its busiest January ever with over 6.3 million passengers—a more than 5% increase compared to last year during that same time frame.
