LONDON (AP) — On Friday evening, the first aircraft touched down at Heathrow Airport approximately 18 hours after a devastating fire at an electrical substation triggered a massive power failure, halting operations at Europe’s busiest airport.
A British Airways flight arrived just before dusk as Heathrow lifted its temporary shutdown order, which had led to severe disruptions in air travel affecting countless passengers worldwide.

Lawrence Hayes was en route from New York when Virgin Atlantic informed passengers that his flight would be redirected toward Glasgow instead. “It was supposed to be a red-eye flight,” he recounted during his exit from the plane in Scotland. “After such a long day, I didn’t even know how much time I had been awake.” Fortunately for him, he managed to contact his wife who booked him a train ticket back to Euston Station; however, he mentioned it would still be an exhausting day ahead.
