PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – The government of Trinidad and Tobago has expressed its profound “disappointment” regarding the recent decision made by the United Kingdom to implement visa requirements for citizens of the nation, effective immediately.
Speaking during a local radio broadcast, CARICOM and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Amery Browne suggested that the administration in Port of Spain may not have anticipated this move from London. He noted that while the UK provided a two-day notice prior to making its announcement public, it still amounted to very little time for adequate preparation.
“On Monday of this week, correspondence was sent from the UK government informing Trinidad and Tobago about the initiation of a visa regime starting Wednesday,” Browne recounted on air. “Although we did receive some prior notification, just 48 hours is hardly sufficient for such an important issue when dealing with allies. Their choice had already been determined before they communicated with us.”
Browne emphasized that there exists a rich history between Trinidad and Tobago and the UK characterized by strong bonds and productive relationships developed over many years. This partnership has facilitated meaningful connections with their diaspora.
The minister also pointed out that aside from family members residing abroad, numerous students are currently pursuing their education in the UK. “Furthermore,” he added, “London acts as a crucial hub for nationals traveling beyond or those heading towards various European locations.”
The UK authorities have mandated that individuals from Trinidad and Tobago will now be required to obtain visas for travel to or through England—be it for short visits or purposes related to employment, academic pursuits or residency.
A transition phase lasting six weeks will allow travelers who booked their flights before these changes were announced—along with those holding electronic travel authorizations (ETAs)—to enter without needing a visa until 15:00 on April 23, 2025. This concession extends also applies to passengers transiting through British territory on their way elsewhere.
John Dean, British High Commissioner in Trinidad and Tobago stated that revising visa policies regularly is part of ensuring effectiveness within immigration controls.
“Unfortunately,” Dean explained further regarding the rationale behind this policy shift: “We have observed an alarming surge in baseless asylum requests by people hailing from Trinidad and Tobago at our borders. The actions taken by a small segment necessitated our ministers’ tough decision to implement visa stipulations.”
This year witnessed staggering statistics showcasing significant increases—by nine times—in asylum requests emanating from Caribbean nations according to Britain’s Home Office data; claims surged dramatically—from an average of merely 49 annually between 2015-2019 up-to approximately 348 in just one year alone as high as last year’s report indicated records revealing almost half again as many at around 439 total claims filed recently.
