T&T Government Urges Swift Reassessment of UK Visa Restrictions

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – The⁤ government of‍ Trinidad⁢ and Tobago expressed its profound disappointment ⁢on Friday regarding the United Kingdom’s immediate implementation of visa⁣ requirements for its citizens from the resource-rich twin-island Republic.

Speaking on a local ‌radio‍ station, CARICOM and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Amery Browne suggested that⁣ Port of‍ Spain may have been taken off guard ‍by London’s ⁤announcement, even though he noted that the UK did provide a 48-hour notice prior to arriving at their decision.

“We received two days’ notice. On Monday, the UK government sent communication to Trinidad and Tobago about new visa‍ regulations starting Wednesday,” Browne informed the radio audience.

“While there was an inclination towards advance warning, just two days is far from adequate ⁤when dealing with allies on such urgent matters. It felt as if their decision was already finalized before it was⁢ communicated to us,” he stated‍ further.

Browne⁢ elaborated on ‌the longstanding relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and the United Kingdom, emphasizing their robust historical connections which include ties with diaspora⁣ communities across both nations. “Beyond ‌familial connections, numerous⁣ individuals depend on travel for medical necessities or are students pursuing education in Britain,” he remarked. “London serves as a key transit ‍hub ‍for many‍ citizens of Trinidad and Tobago heading⁤ to other European destinations.”

The recent directive specifies that nationals from Trinidad and Tobago will require visas for entry into or transit through the UK—this applies not only to short stays but also extends to work-related⁤ visits as⁣ well as academic ⁢pursuits.

“A transition period lasting six weeks until 15:00 hours on April 23, 2025 allows visitors who secured travel arrangements along ‌with⁢ ETA (Electronic Travel Authorizations) before this change occurred can still enter without needing a visa,” stated an official communication from London. There will likewise be similar allowances for those transiting through UK en route elsewhere.”

British High Commissioner‌ John Dean pointed out that visa policies are routinely evaluated by the UK government to maintain their effectiveness.

“In light of substantial increases in unfounded asylum requests presented by nationals of Trinidad and Tobago at our borders recently, this policy shift has had to take place due to actions stemming from ‌a minority group,” Dean explained during his announcement.

The British Home Office‍ has observed an astronomical rise in asylum applications ‍originating from Caribbean nations—from an average of only 49 annually between 2015-2019; claims surged dramatically in numbers: reaching 173 in 2022 followed by another ascent to 348 within just one ⁤year into 2023 alone—with as many as 439 claims filed last year alone.

Browne indicated he would meet Dean later today “to formally express our government’s objections ⁣against‍ these new visa requirements.”

“The rationale behind these restrictions has not left much room for ⁢speculation; it’s explicitly cited—rising unfounded asylum claims stand at its core,” said Browne concerning directives issued by London officials.

Browne ⁢contended that ‌punishing all‍ potential travelers based solely upon errant⁢ behaviour caused by certain individuals presents neither‌ logical nor acceptable grounds. ”This does not effectively address shared challenges we could collaboratively overcome alongside our British counterparts.”.
