A Prestigious Platform for Emerging Artists
This marks the exhibition’s impressive 61st year. Among the numerous works featured, Dr. Darang’s piece entitled “The Konyak,” which captures the essence of tribal identity, will hold a prominent place during this noteworthy event.
A Journey From Pasighat to Global Recognition
Originating from Pasighat in East Siang district, Dr. Darang currently practices dentistry in Guwahati, Assam. He plans to travel to London next week for this extraordinary opportunity. In a conversation with our publication, he elaborated on the rigorous selection process required for artists aspiring to exhibit their work at such a prestigious venue.
The Elimination Process Explained
“The selection involves a meticulous two-tier elimination process,” explained Dr. Darang. “In the initial phase, artists submit photographs and videos of their creations; based on these submissions, jurors shortlist candidates.” Those fortunate enough to be selected then send their actual sculptures for further review.

Ultimately, those chosen are invited to participate not only in an exhibition but also an art sale—a significant milestone that few achieve annually under this highly competitive format where approximately one-third of around one hundred exhibits come through international submissions,” added Dr. Darang with evident pride.
Balancing Dentistry and Sculpture
Despite his primary career as a dental surgeon, Dr. Darang has nurtured an enduring passion for sculpture since childhood.
“My journey began as a self-taught artist before I deepened my expertise by attending sculpture workshops with some talented contemporary sculptors across Spain in late 2022 and subsequently at The Florence Academy of Art nestled within Italy’s rich artistic heritage,” he shared.
