ITANAGAR, March 7: The remarkable sculptural pieces ‍created​ by Dr. Bahom Kaling Darang from⁣ Arunachal Pradesh are set to make waves at the esteemed ‌annual exhibit of the Society of Portrait Sculptors⁢ in the UK. This event⁣ will take place in London from March‌ 17​ to March 30.

Now in ‌its 61st year, this⁣ exhibition is​ a significant platform for artists worldwide. Dr. ⁤Darang’s notable piece titled ‘The Konyak’ will be featured prominently among other unique artworks.

A ‍Journey⁤ of Passion and Dedication

Based ⁢in Guwahati, Assam, ⁢and ⁤originally from Pasighat in​ East Siang district, Dr. Darang brings his dual⁣ expertise as a dental surgeon and passionate sculptor to the forefront. He travels to ​London next week⁣ for this prestigious showcase and expressed that selection involves a rigorous two-step process for aspiring participants.

The Selection Process Explained

“Initially, artists⁣ submit photographs and videos of their works during the first screening phase,” explained Dr. Darang regarding his journey into ⁢this ‌elite artistic circle. “From‌ these submissions, judges⁤ create a shortlist after which selected artists must send their physical pieces.” Following this stage is an ⁢invitation for final participants whose works are presented at both an⁤ exhibition and sales event.

Exclusive Opportunities Await

“This exhibition is ‌highly revered; only a⁤ select few artistically excel each year,” he remarked on the exclusivity of being part of approximately one hundred exhibits presented annually—two-thirds open internationally for ⁤competitive entries.” His feelings reflect pride mixed with gratitude for this recognition.

Despite his professional commitments as a dental​ surgeon, art has been an enduring passion ⁣throughout his life’s ⁤journey.

“My initial learning was self-taught,” shared Dr. Darang about how he embarked on sculpture creation over time; enlightening experiences stemmed from specialized workshops conducted by acclaimed contemporary sculptors across Spain (in​ 2022) and Italy at The‍ Florence Academy of Art‍ (anticipated completion ⁢in late 2024).

A Vision Rooted in Heritage

Dedicated to reflecting⁤ indigenous identities through artistry, he focuses⁢ on crafting sculptures representing various Northeast Indian tribes—particularly those emerging from Arunachal ⁣Pradesh—to introduce their rich cultures ​globally.
