Honoring the Heroes of the Lisbon Maru: A Reception in London
A Commemorative Event for Survivors’ Families
On February 22, 2025, the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom hosted a heartfelt gathering in London honoring the families of individuals who survived the Lisbon Maru incident. This special reception served a dual purpose: to commemorate an extraordinary rescue mission during World War II and to celebrate the Spring Festival.

The Historical Context: Remembering a Critical Rescue
In October 1942, during tumultuous wartime conditions, the cargo ship Lisbon Maru was commandeered by Japanese forces to transport over 1,800 British prisoners of war (POWs) from Hong Kong to Japan. Tragically struck by American forces near Zhejiang Province’s Zhoushan Islands, this ship sank while local fishermen bravely put their lives on the line to save more than 300 POWs—a remarkable act of valor that resonates even today.
This year marks an important anniversary—the 80th commemoration of both China’s successful resistance against Japanese aggression and broader efforts within global anti-fascist movements during WWII.
Reflections from Leadership
At this poignant event, Chinese Ambassador Zheng Zeguang spoke about these historical events with notable pride. He emphasized that such bravery encapsulates not only a shared history but solidifies China and Britain’s long-standing alliance against fascism. The ambassador noted that these moments have fostered deep ties between citizens of both nations—friendships which he remarked “will never fade” and remain “indispensable” assets for their bilateral relations.

Building New Connections Through Remembrance
As guests mingled together at this significant gathering—some even taking part in singing Auld Lang Syne—stories were exchanged among family members regarding their loved ones’ experiences with kindness from Chinese rescuers.
Lindsey Archer spoke candidly about her uncle who perished aboard Lisbon Maru. She expressed gratitude for such commemorative occasions as they nurture new friendships while honoring ancestral memories. Archer underscored how crucial it is to keep alive accounts detailing sacrifices made by those before them—reminding attendees that these histories have helped shape contemporary realities.
Reflecting back on last year’s visit to China alongside fellow descendants—including Kenneth Salmon—to honor those lost at sea deepened his emotional connection with Zhoushan’s community. Salmon highlighted how important it is for younger generations present when discussing historical narratives because understanding one’s heritage fosters greater appreciation for family legacies over time.
