Londoners catching the sun by the River Thames. almost in the shadow of Tower Bridge.
After the second world war people were eager to return to the happy days they had before, , and this stretch of sand ( Imported ) was the nearest thing to actually being at the seaside.
It was created in 1934 and closed againfor the duration of the war, re-opening again in 1946. It remained popular until 1971 when increasing river polution forced its closure, access only being givenon a few special occasions since..
