Rotten Row, Hyde Park, London – Postcard

A broad track running along the south side of Hyde Park, established by William III as a royal transit route between palaces.

Originally called ‘Route de Roi’, which was corrupted into Rotten Row. It was the first artificially lit highway in Britain – 300 oil lamps in 1690.

Rotten Row was traditionally a fashionable place for upper-class Londoners to be seen horse riding
