Planning a trip across the Atlantic in 2025? Make sure to include a crucial item on your travel preparation list: applying for an “Electronic Travel Authorization” (ETA).
What is the ETA?
Starting January 8, 2025, travelers heading to the United Kingdom for short visits—lasting six months or fewer, whether for leisure or business—will be required to obtain this new visa waiver.
How Does It Compare Globally?
Similar to the ESTA program implemented by the United States, which mandates visitors pay for a travel authorization with prior security vetting, CNN reports that this will streamline entry into the UK.
Who Needs an ETA?
Citizens from 48 nations—including those from the U.S.—will need to apply and pay a fee of £10. In current currency rates, that amounts to approximately $12.50.
How Can You Apply?
There are two methods available for application: through the official government portal or via an app designed specifically for this purpose. According to CNN, this mobile application claims faster processing times of around ten minutes.
However, while you may receive initial feedback swiftly, it can take up to three days—or occasionally longer—for final approval of your ETA.
Requirements for Application
To successfully complete your ETA application as outlined by the UK’s official guidelines, you will need:
- Your passport (you’ll upload a photo of it during application)
- A recent photograph of yourself
- A payment method such as credit or debit card and options like Apple Pay or Google Pay
Additionally, expect some questions regarding your intended travels during the application process.
The Validity Period and Family Requirements
Your approved ETA will remain valid for any trips into the UK over two years as long as your passport does not expire within that timeframe; otherwise, reapplication is necessary.
Your whole family must have individual ETAs; there isn’t a group option available. Thus every traveler—from toddlers and teenagers to senior citizens—will require their own authorization.
